Attraction Names / Copywriting for
Disney's
California Adventure |
In 1997,
Karma Creative
consultant Mark Jonathan
Davis was hired to help develop attraction names,
slogans, sign copy, and other themed nomenclature
for Disney's new California Adventure theme park,
which opened next to Disneyland on February 8, 2001
in Anaheim, California. The park pays tribute to the
state of California's diverse scenery, history, and
culture.
In addition to helping invent names for many of the
rides (such as "The Orange Stinger" and "King
Triton's Carrousel"), restaurants (including "Burger
Invasion," "Pizza Oom Mow Mow," "Taste Pilots'
Grill," "Corn Dog Castle," "Catch A Flave Ice
Cream," |
|
"Brrrbank
Ice Cream," and "Boardwalk Betty's
Strips, Dips, 'n' Chips"), and retail
facilities (including "SideShow Shirts,"
"Pt. Mugu Tattoo," "Treasures In
Paradise," and "Dinosaur Jack's Sunglass
Shack"),
Karma Creative helped
conceptualize the design conceits for
several of the park's attractions
(including "Burger Invasion").
Our consultants/writers collaborated
with WDI's creative team to script everything from
menu text to themed graffiti. In the "Cowhenga
Pass" ball-toss game,
Karma Creative
wrote----and painted!----farm-themed
taglines for the booth, including
phrases like "Just Moo It," "Steer
Clear," and "There's Something About
Dairy."
We also contributed copy for
billboard taglines, poster slogans, interior signs and visual gags for
a number of areas and attractions,
including "Superstar Limo," the "Greetings
From California" and "Engine-Ears Toys" stores, "Mulholland Madness," and other
park rides. And, our
Song
Search service was utilized to
develop background music playlists for the Paradise
Pier, Plaza California, and Condor Flats areas.
In
addition to writing for the theme park
itself,
Karma Creative
was also hired to write ad copy, public
relations materials, corporate
presentations, and employee reference
guides about Disney's California
Adventure, Disneyland's "it's a small
world" and Fantasyland areas, the new
Downtown Disney shopping district, and
the Disneyland Hotel complex.
Collaborating with Walt Disney Imagineering's teams
of planners, designers, architects, and decorators,
we worked simultaneously on numerous
projects, and delivered excellence each time, on
time. From concept to planning to development to
installation, Karma Creative was a key resource in
the creative process, and we're proud to have helped
Disney create more memorable magic in its newest
theme park.

copy contributions, now on display at DCA.

TV Jingles for NBC, CBS,
Nick At Nite, and KROQ |
Since 1993,
Karma
Creative has
been producing jingles and parody songs
for network television promos, radio
station spots, and TV shows for clients
like NBC, CBS, MTV, The WB, Fox Family
Channel, TVLand, Nick At
Nite, and KROQ Radio.
At NBC,
Karma
Creative
worked on-staff in the network's on-air
promotions department. We wrote
parody lyrics, produced music, sang
jingles, and helped edit network promos
and interstitial programs, creating
parody promos about sitcoms like
"Friends," "Will & Grace," and
"Frasier," as well as special songs for
airings of "Jurassic Park" and
"Twister."
These
award-winning
promo spots ran regularly during NBC's
"Must See TV," and even aired during the
Super Bowl.
Our parodies inspired NBC to create
"Johnny Chimes," a singing animated
peacock mascot, which was digitally
animated to synchronize with the song vocals. The character was
used extensively in on-air promos, and
helped earn
Karma
Creative
a
Promax Gold Medallion Award for its
production of an NBC Affiliate Marketing
Presentation. |
|
For Nick At
Nite, we invented all-new lyrics to
popular TV sitcom theme songs, including
"The Dick Van Dyke Show," "The Bob
Newhart Show," and "Bewitched." We
also created an entire parody song about
"I Dream Of Jeannie," sung to the tune
of Suzanne Vega's hit song "Tom's
Diner." These parodies were written,
recorded, and produced by
Karma
Creative, and
then music video promos were cut for
each one.
At KROQ-FM
in Los Angeles,
Karma
Creative
contributed imaging jingles, station
promos, instrumental beds, feature theme
songs, spoof commercials, and other
creative audio to the Kevin & Bean
Morning Show. We also produced
several of the program's annual holiday
albums, tracking vocals and directing
the talents of celebrities such as
Johnny Cash, Cindy Crawford, Phil
Collins, Chris Isaak, Andy Dick, Barry
White, and Tony Bennett.
Click on the images below to enjoy some
of the jingles and songs we've written, performed, and produced for
radio, television, and beyond. |

Parody Song Lyrics for
ABC-TV's House Of Mouse
Animated Series |
In 2000,
Karma
Creative was hired to compose parody lyrics, produce
songs, and develop musical plotlines for
ABC/Disney's
|
|
animated Saturday
morning series "House Of Mouse," starring Mickey
Mouse and a clubful of kooky cartoon characters.
Click here to read a press release about the
show.
In addition to writing new
words to classic Disney songs, our creative team
arranged the music tracks, recorded complete demos,
and helped direct the animation voice-over actors in
their recording studio performances.
Here are
some samples of the songs
Karma
Creative wrote and
arranged for the series:
-
"Soup Or Salad, Fries
Or Biscuits, Extra Olives, Donuts" - this
peppy parody of the classic Disney tune "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"
stars Goofy (in the role of befuddled waiter at The
House Of Mouse nightclub) bemoaning the odd orders of
his customers.
-
"I Wanna Be Like M-O-You" - King
Louie's brother Larry duets with Mickey Mouse on this
"Jungle Book" tune, with an envious Larry
asking Mickey for advice on how to mind his manners.
-
to read the lyrics for these songs,
plus two others written for the
"House Of Mouse" series, "You Can
Fly, You Can Fly (Donald version)"
and "A Parrot's Life For Me."
Karma Creative
worked on a number of
songs for
the series, seven of which are available on the "Disney's House Of Mouse"
soundtrack album.

of our parody songs can be heard in this medley
showcasing some of our lyric writing:

Karma Creative
boasts a versatile and talented team of
singers, announcers, and voice-over artists. Our
actors and actresses have provided hundreds of
vocals and voices for TV series, movies,
commercials, radio morning shows, cartoons, and
concerts, plus albums, soundtracks, and music
videos.
Our founder Mark Jonathan Davis has provided voice-over
performance and dialogue looping services to
hundreds of clients in radio, television, stage,
screen, and multimedia. Please click on the
links below to listen to his voice-over demos:
Davis also provided voice-over
services for numerous attractions for Disneyland and Disney's
California Adventure, Walt
Disney World in Florida, and the company's new
DisneyQuest franchise.
In DCA's "Superstar Limo" ride, Davis plays a Hollywood announcer. DCA's "Soarin' Over California"
features Davis hollering as a fisherman and a
tumbling snowboarder.
And, in the "It's A Bug's Life" attraction (located
at DCA and at WDW's Animal Kingdom), Davis provides
the character voices of a stink-bug-sprayed flea
("You couldn't hurt a flea!"), and a buzz-bombing
hornet ("I'm goin' in for the sting!").
Also at WDW's Animal
Kingdom, the voices of Davis and Karma Creative
alum James Arnold Taylor can be heard as "security
guards" in search of a missing dinosaur in a
"Countdown To Extinction" surveillance video.
And at WDW's Magic Kingdom park, on the classic
"PeopleMover" ride, Davis can be heard in a "Star
Command" announcement promoting Buzz Lightyear's
Space Ranger Spin. Plus, in DisneyQuest's new "Pirates Of The Caribbean:
Battle For Buccaneer Gold" 3-D arcade game, Davis,
Taylor,
and other Karma Creative performers portray
numerous pirate voices.
